And it sure is a soggy one here, but as the saying goes, "April showers bring May flowers!" I'm hoping it will come true this year as it has been one gruesome winter in Northern Michigan. Ask anyone around this area and they will say it's been the worst winter they've ever seen, no lie. So I'm still waiting for warmer weather and hate seeing "much cooler than average" forecasts for this spring and summer. Oh well, I'll just have to knit some shawls to keep my shoulders warm.
Lately we've been counting down the inches of snow that's left and trying to get outside to accomplish some work. Brendan has already started drilling holes for the vineyard; I think he's about 40% complete on that task. Once the holes are drilled, we'll be heading to New York to pick up our grape vines. Hard to believe that these days are here! No more time for planning, just a lot of doing now. We started seeding our cold weather vegetables in the basement and now we have little broccoli, kale and cabbage plants.
Oh yeah, maybe I should share with you all our new plans! We are continuing with the vineyard, but putting the winery on hold for now. In the mean time we are starting a farm. We'll be focusing on heirloom vegetables and cut flowers for now, but also have chickens on order. Our name is Harvest Thyme Farm & Vineyards, so please check us out on Facebook or our website! We are all excited about it and can't wait to get the ball rolling.
What is a KAL? Well on the fiber art community known as Ravelry, one can find patterns, follow designers and join groups and from here people come up with KALs for people to follow within a certain time frame on a specific pattern. I was intrigued by this KAL because it used self-striping yarn, which I've never knitted with before, and it was for some basic mittens that would be good to wear this spring. So I decided to join in on the Linden Mittens KAL by Jane Richmond to knit myself a pair of mittens (and be entered to win a skein of yarn). The KAL lasted two weeks, March 10th-24th, and I was able to complete my mittens on time, despite working eight 10-hour days in a row during the two weeks (yes, I said eight 10-hour days)! I'm pleased with the finished object as the color will go well with one of my jackets, plus they are shades of green and very spring-like, which I'm in dire need! This project may have even introduced me to a new addiction of self-striping yarn, so I'll have to try knitting some socks soon. Here are the photos of my progress over the two weeks, of which I really only knitted on them for four or five days.
I would also like to take some time in this post to say a goodbye to the family cat that we've had since I was in elementary school. It is still dipping below zero some nights and not going above freezing during the day. And we still have three-foot snowbanks in our driveway, unfortunately. This winter has been one of the worst I've seen and it is draggingggggg. The calendar may say it is spring, but Michigan says otherwise. However, I have been able to complete a few knitting projects during this time, so I thought I'd finally share them.
So I've been a little busy during this long, cold winter. I'm just ready for spring-like weather to make an appearance in Northern Michigan. My knitting should be changing from dark, heavy wool to light, bright and airy once it gets warmer. I'm longing for more color! Also, with spring on its way that means it's seed planting time. We already have some kale, broccoli and cabbage sprouting under the lights in the basement. That gives us some hope that winter will soon end.Gretahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17363283690488655578noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8336959475377758151.post-48203597578990527192013-11-22T11:27:00.000-08:002013-11-22T11:27:43.199-08:00One new, one oldI feel like I've been going non-stop since I moved back to Michigan; mostly non-stop working, but I finally have a day off...five to be exact! So I have two finished projects to share with you all, my Sunset Suncrest Shawl and an oldie, my February Sweater. I finished the shawl a few weeks ago and it is the perfect color for fall. Plus, I finally got around to finding the perfect buttons for my sweater the other weekend and sewed those on this morning. Of course, I love them both!

I have to admit that I've already started a new project...Shallows Cowl by Bonnie Sennott. I would love to have it finished this weekend, but we'll see. Not too sure how I will fill my time off this weekend, maybe some baking or more wine tasting? The snow is already falling here, so staying indoors just seems like a good idea. If you're looking for a good cookie recipe, I must share one for some pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. I've made two batches already and substituted dark chocolate chips instead...you can find it here on this blog. Enjoy!Gretahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17363283690488655578noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8336959475377758151.post-84887024840855966182013-11-01T13:12:00.001-07:002013-11-01T13:20:40.636-07:00The Hobbit Vest

Happy November! Can't believe it's here already! But now that Halloween is over with, I will share with you my special creation. I was able to knit up a vest for my best friend's toddler, Bennett, as part of his Halloween costume this year. Amy wanted to dress him as a hobbit and I was happy to jump on the opportunity. I must say it came together perfectly; he looked so cute! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see him in person, as they live in Georgia, but I loved seeing the pictures. Here are the details for my project, "Hobbit Vest":

Pattern Used: Pepo Pie by Joeli Caparco
Yarn Used: Knit Picks Swish Worsted in colorways Camel Heather and Truffle
Modifications: I used two different colors; one for the seed stitch border and one for the body. I also attached three buttons, instead of four.
Difficulties: Using the two colors was kind of a pain in the butt. Carrying the yarn up as I went made the skeins tangle together and then I had soooo many ends to weave in.
New Techniques: This was technically my first time using two colors at once. I have also never made a vest before and never constructed pockets before.

Overall, I am very pleased with how it turned out and so is Amy :-) Now it's time to finish my Suncrest shawl....and bake some pumpkin chocolate chip cookies!
I guess you could say that Tennessee just wasn't for us, so Brendan and I are on to something new and something big; we are planning on starting a vineyard and winery. We already have land available to us behind my parents house, so next spring we will be planting about 3,600 vines or about five acres. It will be a huge project to take on, but we are excited and ready to get started. So far we've cleared most of the land and need to get the vines ordered; then we wait through the long winter until the fun begins.

For now I am back working at an old job, but hoping something will open up at a local non-profit. I've already inquired about volunteering with some and am taking on the role of trail steward and preserve steward for the Gauthier Preserve in Cheboygan for the Little Traverse Conservancy. I meet with the volunteer coordinator tomorrow and am excited to get started. Other than that, nothing else is new. I'm glad to be back in colder weather to keep on knitting more and more! I will have some finished projects to post soon, so keep an eye out for them.

As the leaves continue to fall more and more each day, I will be sad to see Fall leave the area. So here are some pictures I've captured of the season during my trip out to New York.
I did it! I made my very first tank top, "Sunny Mackinac Tank," and even before the end of summer! For this project I followed the pattern Mackinac Tank by Danielle Chalson and used Knit Picks Comfy Sport yarn in colorway Creme Brulee. I decided to stray away from my normal color of purple and go with a light yellow. I'm glad I did because it makes the tank look so cheerful, plus this yarn is super soft. I find the name of the pattern to be quite fitting as my hometown is very close to Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City, many memories of summer. The tank itself was very easy to knit, simple knit and purl stitches, but I decided to knit the pattern in the round instead of knitting it in two pieces--seamless! I learned how to attach ruffles while knitting and also how to do the cable cast-on method during mid-row. It was a fun knit-working from the bottom up and watching it grow into something I can wear. And I must say, the finished product fits like a glove and I love it!

Now fall is nearly upon us, so it's time to get serious about yarn and a new adventure starting in my life. More to come soon!
Hello! Just thought I would share what's been going on around the house lately, especially with the flowers and the garden. I can't believe that today is July 1st! Once the 4th rolls around, the rest of summer will fly by I'm sure. So far the heat here has not been as bad as last year, thank goodness! This time last year it was hitting triple digits and not a drop of rain in sight. However, for the month of June we had six inches of rain more than the average, so that means lots of growth!

The garden is growing and growing with no end in sight. Brendan harvests about 6-8 squash and zucchini plants per day, so it's really starting to add up. The tomatoes are ripening, eggplants sprouting and beans lengthening as we speak. We even have some melons started on the trellises. One can really get lost in our garden! It is an oasis with all the vegetables and flowers growing and even the honey bees buzzing as they pollinate, but the mosquitoes tend to ruin the fun of it all.

Our two year anniversary was a couple weeks ago on June 22nd (hard to believe) and Brendan got us some Adirondack chairs and table for the front porch. They came au natural, so we stained them an English chestnut color and then bought some shade plants and pots to create a relaxing setting for us. It was a very nice present, a surprise to me, and I absolutely love it all! We still need to poly the chairs and maybe find some artwork to hang on the house, but we are still enjoying it.
I finally finished my first shawl, 22 Little Clouds. It wasn't the most exciting thing to knit, as it was a no-brainer, but it was perfect to work on after some long days working outside. Plus, the finished product is super cute! I like the clean lines of the pattern and the ruffled edge just adds a little something. Previously, I was hoping to use this yarn as a cardigan, but I'm glad I didn't. I love the yarn of course, but couldn't imagine wearing the colorway as a sweater. This Malabrigo yarn in Lotus is perfect for an accessory to add a pop of color and it is soft and squishy! After knitting this shawl, I must say that I'll be knitting plenty more! My mother warned me of this addiction, but she is right, I enjoyed knitting it, plus they use just the right amount of yarn and can create so many different color combinations or lace techniques. I'm sure you'll be seeing more shawl projects on here, however, for my next project I'm thinking about making a tank top...
I have been slacking, I must say, as I just counted how many new ones there are and got 16, give or take a few! The weather hasn't been cooperating with us lately to take decent photos; some days they wouldn't be fully open before I left for work and then in the evening they would be so faded. Since there are so many new ones, it is hard for me to pick a favorite! Some that I really like are: "Chinese Cloisonne," "Noble Lord," "Picotee Rippled Ruffles," "Spacecoast Bold Buccaneer" and more and more and more...Plus there are still a lot more to bloom! Just a warning, there are lots of pictures in this post, so sit back and enjoy!
This one is called "Mozart" and is an apricot/peach color with red streaks. When it first bloomed on the plant, it was a light yellow color and since I cut it and put it in water it has darkened. It is pretty neat how some of the callas will change like that. So in a few days it may look different from these pictures! Unfortunately, after "Mozart" bloomed I had to dig it up because some of the leaves started yellowing and falling over, which meant the tuber/bulb was rotting. I think I saved it just in time though; it didn't hit the large part of the tuber. This isn't the first one of the callas that I have almost lost though. Last month the same thing happened to one called "Akela." I didn't notice it as early though and now only have two little tubers of "Akela" now. So sad. You may ask, "Why are they rotting?" Well, the soil here in our yard really sucks! It is just a nasty red clay! Even though we built up where the callas are planted, they are still sitting on the clay and it has rained so much here lately that the dirt isn't able to dry out. I just need to keep an eye on them. But here are the pictures of "Mozart" and the callas. Enjoy!

Since it is raining here again, which means we are not working, I thought I'd go ahead and post more pictures from the weekend and today. Luckily, I was able to get out there this morning and take pictures before the rain ruins them. I think my favorite daylily for today's post is "Lake Country Sunshine." It is a small solid yellow one, about 4", with ruffles. To me, it is just so cheerful! Another favorite of mine, which is not a daylily, is a pinkish-purple zinnia. They are just so vibrant! It seems like we have seen a lot of the daylilies so far, but we counted today and there are still 41 new ones to come. Woo hoo!
Also, it's hard for me to come up with a new name for each post every other day, so I decided that the name will be of my favorite bloom for the post. So for today, my favorite bloom is of the daylily "Good Old Boy." This daylily is yellow-gold with a black-purple center, which also outlines its ruffles. It is very unique!

Good Old Boy

A funny thing happened to us today...we went out to see all the daylilies this morning and was expecting to see a bloom from "Copernicus," a light purple daylily. Once we saw it, it was definitely not the right one. We double-checked our list to make sure we had it in order, but came to the conclusion that the company that we bought the daylilies from sent us the wrong one. Instead, we now have a pastel apricot-peach with a red center daylily that produces double blooms. We believe we found the right one online and think its name is "Clueless." I'm not sure how I feel about the double ones, but it is very interesting looking.

Clueless

Another one that I really liked is called "Mister Lucky." I like this one just because it is such a deep red color.

Next up is one that we actually got to see last year, but I thought I would share it with you all now. It is called "Showmanship."

Showmanship

Another large bloom that we have and very similar to "Sea Swept Dreams" is a yellow daylily with bronze petals called "Seaside Sunrise."

Seaside Sunrise

One on the lighter side is "Southern Exposure." It is just a small one, about 4.5", but the center is purple and slightly silver.

Southern Exposure

"New Perspective" joins us with two different petal colors. The first of its kind that we've seen so far.

New Perspective

Lastly, I'd like to share another picture of "Festive Fall." It bloomed again today with two flowers and it just looks so pretty! I really like the bright orange.

Festive Fall

I am caught up with all of the new pictures (for now). I truly hope you all are enjoying the pictures as much as I am! However, I must say that the pictures don't do much justice for them as they are pretty remarkable in person.
It produces 5.5" flowers that are bright yellow with a dark red center. We shall see what it looks like later in the day though...

I have also included a picture of my knitting project (that has been on hold for a little while), 22 Little Clouds. The yarn is very pretty and so soft!
This morning we woke up to not only one, but three new blooms among the daylilies! These ones are called Festive Fall, Killer Instinct and Sea Swept Dreams. Festive Fall's bloom was not up to par, so I need to capture another one. Killer Instinct's bloom is around 7" and it may look like two different flowers in the pictures, but it is just how much it faded during the day. My favorite from today is Sea Swept Dreams. Its bloom is almost bigger than my hand! Plus I like its ruffles and pearlescent petals, so romantic looking. Tomorrow there will probably be only one blooming, but not to worry, almost every daylily has a flower spike. So exciting!! We also had a few zinnias and cosmos bloom, but they're not as showy as the daylilies. Enjoy all the pictures!
This one is called "Moonlit Masquerade" and produces 5.5" flowers. It is the first of many to come as almost every daylily we have has flower spikes growing. We also had another hollyhock bloom, it's a darker pink compared to the first one. Soon enough we should have some zinnias! And I replanted my hanging baskets for the summer and this year I used two kinds of sweet potato vine (light and dark), a coral verbena and a white calibrachoa or million bells. I can't wait until they fill in!

Yesterday just wasn't our day with flowers...two of our dahlia tubers bit the dust. It's been raining too much for them and they just turned to mush. However, we did cut off the soggy part and repotted them to see if they will come back. Also...sadly to say, one of my orchids might croak. It's my dark yellow and pink, tiger looking one. About three of its leaves fell off yesterday and we took it out of its pot and a bunch of roots were rotted. So I had to cut off the rotten roots and repotted it into some different potting media. As of right now, it's still living and the flowers are still perky, so we'll see what happens. I think the humidity rose too quickly and I loved it too much (aka I over watered). For my other orchids, I've put them back in front of the living room window and now have a fan blowing over them to combat the humidity. I hope this helps!
Ahh yes, time to cue the generic "it's been way too long since I've posted" blog post. But I must say lots has happened since the last post. The garden is almost completely planted and everything seems to be settling into their new homes fairly well. Some of the annual seeds are sprouting, we have flowers on some tomato plants and we have our first bloom of the season on a hollyhock. As of this week, there were 42/45 dahlias and 8/12 calla lilies sprouting. Now that it has officially heated up down here, it's only a matter of time for everything to start blooming. Next week we may even see the first daylilies of the season. All of this growing just gets me excited to see all the color in the yard!
As for the knitting....I did finish my February Sweater, however, I still need to find buttons for it. I am pleased with how it turned out, but it ended up too long after blocking. A few weeks ago I started my first shawl; it is a free pattern on Ravelry called 22 Little Clouds. I am using some of my Malabrigo yarn, Rastita, for it and it is super soft! Too bad I won't be able to wear it until the fall now.

Most recently, I started a new job as a part-time cashier with a local garden center. It doesn't sound too difficult, but man it can be pretty stressful. The phone rings off the hook, lots of customers and too many plants to learn! It is apparently their "busy season" right now, so I'm hoping it will get a little easier. One last bit of news, I have a new orchid! It is a beautiful all white one that Brendan's mom bought me last weekend when she was here. Quite a surprise!
I must say it has been an eventful weekend, so far! One big accomplishment that has been made is planting the dahlias. We have two rows dug out in the yard, about 65 feet long, to hold 45 different dahlia tubers. These plants are quite remarkable, they grow like potatoes (I am told), can grow to 5.5 feet tall and produce up to 14 inch blooms! I cannot wait to see how these flowers will turn out! Unfortunately, I have to wait until August and September to see them in action. After the growing season though, they should multiply and produce up to five more tubers. That means even more flowers next year! We ordered these tubers from Swan Island Dahlias all the way from Oregon. It must be a site to see their gardens! Now it's a waiting game to see who will pop-up first.
Sad news for one of my orchids...I had to cut-off one of its leaves and now it only has two left. A little while ago I noticed a black streak on the leaf, which could have been from too much direct sunlight or some kind of fungal disease happening. Well, I waited too long to try and do something about it and eventually the whole leaf started turning yellow. It was even progressing towards the stem. Yikes! So last night I finally got the courage to cut the leaf. I used a very sharp razor blade, sterilized it with matches before, made the cut and then covered the open wound with some cinnamon to prevent any bacteria from growing. I don't have any anti-fungal powder on hand so that is why I used the cinnamon. I hope this orchid will survive and that I didn't wait too long. Oddly enough it sprouted two new buds a few weeks ago, even though it was fully bloomed already. I may have to cut those off though so it will work on growing leaves instead.
The warm weather has found us! It reached 80+ degrees last week, surprisingly. Not a huge fan of the temperature jump though; it completely skipped the 60s and 70s! But with this warm weather we can now start planting the garden with our heirloom vegetables. The garden area is freshly tilled and planting rows are being made as I type, so it's just a matter of time before the tomatoes are planted. And the day is still young! Lastly for the weekend, I planted 11 bird's nest spruce trees in the backyard. Why may you ask? Well, they were from a landscaping job we installed and oddly enough the lady over-cared for her low-maintenance landscape that she wanted. With all the rain that we received in February and March, plus the watering she did daily was just too much for these little spruces. Eventually, the needles started turning red and falling off from all the water. So we kindly replaced all of the dying bushes with new ones and I ended up with 11 dying bushes. We decided to plant them in the back by all the trees to see if they would make a comeback. Sure enough, buds have started forming and sprouting. Looks like we're in luck! So like I said, it's been an eventful weekend.Gretahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17363283690488655578noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8336959475377758151.post-2680738281074923572013-04-04T05:55:00.001-07:002013-04-04T05:55:09.629-07:00Update: February Sweater
See...I said I'd be finished knitting the body soon! For Valentine's Day this year, Brendan pleasantly surprised me with two orchids from Norman's Orchids. They are absolutely beautiful and I can't believe they made it in one piece all the way from Montclair, CA! Both of them are Phalaenopsis orchids, well technically one is Doritaenopsis a cross between Doritis and Phalenopsis, but it is very similar to the Phal. genus. So they are just "hobbyist" orchids, but I love them! I must admit though...owning orchids really does become a hobby. In the beginning of March I discovered the Smoky Mountain Orchid Society; just in time really because they had an orchid show at a mall in Knoxville. Of course I had to go! And from that little trip, my orchid collection doubled...I gave in and bought two more Phal. orchids. Only thousands more to collect!
This past week on my "Sweet Fragrance" orchid, another flower opened. There are now six blooms on this orchid and I decided to capture the blooming process. This orchid is the only one of mine that has a fragrance, hence the name, and it still has two buds left to open. I hope you enjoy its beauty as much as I do!

In other news, I'm still working on my February Sweater, sadly I don't think I'll have it finished by tomorrow. I'm almost done knitting on the body part though! Then the sleeves should be easy (crossing fingers). We have been doing some work outside around the house, like cleaning the backyard some and mowing the grass. Brendan made a birdhouse today out of a pallet and we had a little visitor this morning, a Pileated Woodpecker! Cannot believe tomorrow is April! Yikes! Oh, and Happy Easter!!

I thought spring started almost a week ago? Well, it's hard to believe it as the temperatures have been 25-30 degrees below average the last few days.

Towards the beginning of the month I had spring fever hit me...I wanted to go to every garden center and see all the new plants for the season. I even bought a few pansies to liven up the front of the house. They've had some rough nights though, being out in 20 degree weather. So last night I brought them inside and will keep them in for a few more days. They are just so cheerful sitting in the living room that I had to take some pictures.

Let's hope for some warmer weather next week...
I would have liked to finish this back in February, seeing as how I could have worn it the past few days, surprisingly. Instead, I got sidetracked with a few other projects, such as Amy's birthday cowl, Bennett's cute little cardigan and my quilted lattice cowl. I will include pictures of these projects on here soon!

Now back to my current project: February Sweater. It is a free pattern that I found on Ravelry by Pamela Wynne called "February Lady Sweater." I strolled across this one day and noticed that it wasn't too difficult and doesn't require a lot of yarn. Two things that I look for in knitting projects, the latter because I'm on a super tight budget right now. It can't be too difficult because it currently has 12,629 projects linked to it on Ravelry, by some of the 3 million users. Holy crap! It's a pretty popular pattern!

I am using KnitPicks Wool of the Andes yarn in colorway Lava Heather. Very pretty color that I can't determine if it's red, pinkish or purple yet, but I like it. So far the knitting has been easy; I feel that I probably should have knitted more on the yoke part before starting the lattice pattern, but it fits just fine right now. I have three buttonholes now, but I'm thinking I might sew one up when I'm finished so there's only two...it looks a little odd. I wish I could have it finished by tomorrow, since it will only be 39 degrees here! I'll aim to have it finished by April 1st though.
Lately I've been thinking to myself that I'd like a place to compile my different knitting projects and pictures of my flowers. I felt that a blog would be a good way to stay updated and organized, as well as share with my friends and family. So welcome to my blog, Blooms and Stitches! Through this blog I will post about my works in progress and some previous finished knitting projects. I will also share my progress with gardening around the house, like my orchids and several annuals and perennials. Lastly, I will share some of my hiking experiences around Tennessee.
Spring has officially arrived and what better way to kick it off than to show some of my tulips that I grew over the winter. I forced the bulbs by placing them in a jar with some stones and water at the bottom, put them in a dark, cool spot until they sprouted and then moved them to a sunny windowsill. I've never grown tulips before, but after these cheerful blooms, I've become a fan! Enjoy!
